Moadoniot / After School Activity
Poverty. Apathy. Substance Abuse. Violence. Depression…these are but a few of the reasons why a staggering 53% of all children living in Jaffa and south Tel Aviv will drop out of school before completing the 12th grade.
From a young age, these youth live amongst turmoil and desperation in poor, often violent surroundings. With no positive role models available and absent or neglectful parents, the only option for these youth after school is the streets. There they are exposed to drugs as well as to those who try to lure them into committing petty crime and risky behavior. Their immediate safety, and any hope for the future, is in serious jeopardy.
The Jaffa Institute’s After School Activity Program is geared towards providing comprehensive services to hundreds of underprivileged children from the greater Jaffa area in first through sixth grades. The program takes place five days a week, ten months out of the year between 1pm and 6pm within four Jaffa Institute program sites in Jaffa, Southern Tel Aviv and Bat Yam. The Moadoniot also provide full day intersession activities for the weeks when school is closed.
Our after school programs provide these children with a safe alternative to the streets and hope for the future. Here, they have the opportunity and tools to grow and learn in a secure environment. Our counselors are living role models who demonstrate the benefits of doing well and staying in school. A better school performance means they are much less likely to drop out or be lured into the dangers of street life.
Designed to nurture the entire child, our programs care for the physical, emotional, educational and creative needs of each, all the while emphasizing how important s/he is.
Children are provided with transportation to and from the centers and hot lunches, as well as a wide range of programs and services including vital therapies, health care, tutoring and enrichment.
The Jaffa Institute is currently establishing a new Moadonit in the Hatikvah neighbourhood of Tel Aviv that will especially cater to children that suffer from severe learning and behavioural difficulties.
