Spotlight On: Socio-Drama at Beit Ruth |

The Jaffa Institute's Beit Ruth Hostel for at-Risk Girls has recently introduced a 44 week socio-drama program for its residents. Also known as "Drama Therapy", this process helps to achieve the therapeutic goal of symptom relief, emotional and physical integration, as well as enhancing each teen's personal growth.
Once a week the girls practice role-playing, theatre games, mime, puppetry and other improvisational techniques as an active approach to telling a problematic story. This unique therapy helps them solve a problem by extending the depth and breadth of inner experience, understanding the meaning of images, and strengthening the ability to observe personal roles while increasing flexibility between roles. The residents have the opportunity to share their talents, experience the disciplines of rehearsal, collaboration and practice and, for most, receive the first applause of their lives. The 44-weeks end with a stage performance in front of the community and other ticket-holders.

| An Update from The Dutch Friends of the Jaffa Institute - |

In a mailing sent out last December to 2,000 friends across Holland, the Dutch Friends of the Jaffa Institute raised a record breaking $70,000 to dedicate toward the Institute's various programs. An additional $1,500 was raised within 2 short hours at a recent "fancy fair". The Jaffa Institute would like to express its gratitude to this amazing organization for more than 20 years of steadfast support.
This organization continues to underscore the importance of the Jaffa Institute's work through advocacy, education, and by requesting that birthday, anniversary, and other presents be replaced with directed donations to the Jaffa Institute.

| Sponsor a Child for the Summer - |

On July 1st the Jaffa Institute will enter another year of our time-honored summer camp activities, ensuring that hundreds of kids will be supervised during the long, hot summer days. The aim of the summer program is to provide impoverished children with a fun-filled, healthy, safe, and educational alternative to being on the streets.
In addition, our Therapeutic Center remains open, so children who receive social and educational support services during the school year will be able to continue without interruption. The Jaffa Institute Summer Camps program is one of the few in Israel that runs both in July and in August, leaving idle, unsupervised time at the minimum. The cost for each child participating in the 2-month summer camp is $750. Help us and sponsor a child for the summer!!

Bar Mitzvah Celebrations for our Ethiopian Students
The Bet Shemesh Educational Center's new-immigrant Ethiopian students were excited at the approach of their Bar Mitzvah group celebration which took place on May 25th. These boys, many from families having great difficulties, started out at the absorption center in Mevasseret Zion and have moved to Bet Shemesh.
Each year this celebration is one of the highlight events at Bet Shemesh. We present each student with a set of Tefillin and a Talit. The parents of the Bar Mitzvah boys are invited to join us for a festive morning service with the entire student body which is followed by a breakfast celebration.
The boys were especially excited as this is the first time that they pray with their own Tefillin. Following breakfast, we took the boys on a tour of Jerusalem, which included a tour of a Tefillin manufacturer, a visit to the Western Wall, and lunch.

Unique Naming Opportunities
A named gift opportunity sends a strong message to our students, visitors, and people living in the Jaffa Institute's service area that an individual, business, or organization has loaned their name to the Institute's efforts to provide educational and social service programs to Israel's most vulnerable populations. We invite you to consider the variety of naming opportunities available and help the Jaffa Institute address current needs while preparing for the challenges of the future. Naming opportunities start at $3,600.

Youth 4 Youth News
Bar Mitzvah Visit - Bnei Mitzvah Steven Abadi and Yaelle Shaked from Puerto Rico, together with their family and friends, paid a visit to the Jaffa Institute and brought sports equipment and art supplies they had collected for our youngsters as a Mitzvah project. Upon arrival, they were immediately invited to participate in a soccer game against The Jaffa Institute youngsters.
The latter won the match by 3-1, amidst much cheering on both sides. The young Bar Mitzvah group then continued on to volunteer at the Food Distribution Center, packing food boxes for needy families.
Youth Foundations - Since 1997, Jewish teens in organized youth philanthropy programs have been giving grants to nonprofit organizations across the world. The Jaffa Institute, through our Youth-4-Youth Initiative, is affiliated with a number of these Youth Philanthropy organizations and has recently been awarded funding from the following teen foundations:
The Tallahassee Jewish Federation Teen Philanthropy Initiative for our Fight Against Hunger Program.
The Jewish Youth Philanthropy Institute of Maryland for our After School Enrichment Programming (Moadoniot).
The North Peninsula Jewish Community Teen Foundation for the Community Dental Clinic.
The New York region of NFTY is piloting a North American initiative for NFTY regions to create year-long partnerships with grassroots organizations in Israel. The Jaffa Institute was selected as the pilot organization for the project. The youngsters will learn about Israel through their connection with the Jaffa Institute while helping to support our work.
THANK YOU - to Mitchell Backelman for his Bar Mitzvah donation to our Food Programs; to Sophie Smolen for the proceeds of her bake sale; and to the students of Temple Beth El of Voorhees, The Flemington Jewish Center, Temple Bnai Abraham Livingston NJ and The Monroe Temple of Liberal Judaism for their efforts and donations.

Summer Vacation and My Estate Plan
As the summer approaches we begin making plans for travel and vacations, which sometimes include extended periods away from home. Before leaving home, it is a good time to be sure our estate plan is updated and in order. Have you been planning to contact your attorney to write a will, or make an adjustment to an existing will? Now is the time to put things in order so that you can put your mind at ease during your vacation.
Preparing a will is the way to ensure that your assets and capital are distributed as YOU WISH. A will is probably the most important document in your estate. If prepared professionally, it will speak on your behalf. Once you have taken care of your family's needs, we ask you to consider including a thoughtful bequest to the Jaffa Institute. Bequests are essential to allow us to keep providing a warm and supportive environment for the children of Jaffa and other disadvantaged areas in Israel. In doing so you will demonstrate the depth of your commitment to the children of Israel.
If you have an existing will, your attorney can establish your charitable bequest with a simple amendment or codicil. For example, in the United States, the following wording could be added to a will:
"I bequeath $_____________ (or ___% of my residuary estate) to The American Friends of the Jaffa Institute, 171-06 76th Ave. Flushing, NY 11366".
If you have any questions or would like to discuss any aspect of your estate plan, please feel free to contact our planned giving advisor, Yechiel Marcus by e-mail at yechiel@jaffainst.co.il, or by phone in the United States at 646-280-8329 or in Israel at 972-54- 491-6217. He will be pleased to send you our complimentary brochure on the subject of planned giving.

| Gad Ze'evi's Gift to the Children of Jaffa Dalet |

| Gad Ze'evi, a prominent businessman and member of the Jaffa Institute's Israel Public Council, donated the wall mural he bid on at the Institute's 'Unique Auction' that took place at the Gala Event in January. Donated by the artist Ami Zarug, the mural decorates the walls of the Jaffa Dalet activities site, located in an impoverished section of Jaffa and composed of native Israelis and 1st, 2nd and 3rd generation immigrants, including new immigrants from Ethiopia. The mural is a representation of the different cultures residing in the neighborhood where 33 children, ages 6-11, arrive daily to receive after school homework assistance, educational and recreational enrichment, and a nutritious hot meal. |

Emergency Delivery to Jaffa's Elderly - |

The Jaffa Institute's Food Distribution Center was quick to respond to an emergency request from the Tel Aviv - Jaffa Municipality that came the day before the first Passover Seder. 70 families of Holocaust survivors - who were enrolled in a food distribution program with another nonprofit organization - would not receive their holiday packages because their organization did not manage to raise the necessary funds. Jaffa Institute staff quickly assembled additional holiday parcels and delivered them to the 70 families in time for the holiday.
