Nutrition & Health
Hot Lunch Program
Students who participate in the After School Enrichment Program are provided with a hot nutritious meal everyday before the beginning of our afternoon activities. This helps to maximize concentration and supports a healthy lifestyle. Each meal contains a grain, fruit/vegetable, and protein.
Sandwich Program
The Jaffa Institute makes and distributes around 1,000 sandwiches daily to schools in the area for children who are not able to attend the Jaffa Institute’s afternoon program. The daily sandwich program not only provides a nutritious lunch to children who would otherwise go hungry, but also provides part-time jobs to three previously unemployed women. Every morning the women arrive at our Food Distribution Center at 5:30 AM to begin preparing the sandwiches. Each of the packages comes with a sandwich and a fruit or vegetable.
Dental Clinics
Dental care is not included in Israel’s National Insurance basket of services. Thousands of Israel’s children do not receive the dental care they desperately need because their parents cannot afford the treatments. The Jaffa Institute’s Dental Clinic provides complete professional dental care to children aged 6-18 who come recommended from the Tel Aviv-Jaffa municipality’s community social workers.
Special Therapeutic Clinics are operated at two of the Jaffa Institute’s Moadoniot to help the many children who suffer from psycho-social problems. These clinics are staffed by full-time social workers, speech therapists, and special education teachers, as well as student interns. Prior to receiving any services, all the children are assessed by a certified social worker or psychologist. Periodical assessments are conducted throughout the year to determine if their needs are being met. Counseling is provided on a weekly basis for those children who are most at-risk. Special education is provided to children with learning difficulties such as dyslexia, and speech therapy is provided for children with speech impediments. In addition, family therapy is provided to help parents cope with their own tribulations, including how to communicate with their children without resorting to violence.
