May 2019

As we enter the spring season, the Jaffa Institute is proud to have implemented our traditional Pesach Food Campaign, leading special celebrations with our local community, and maintaining quality programming across all 35 of our program sites in the greater Tel Aviv-Jaffa area and Bet Shemesh. We are pleased to share our budding accomplishments, and hope you will continue to support us and watch each project bloom for years to come!

A Heartfelt Delivery

During our annual Pesach Food Campaign, the Jaffa Institute hosted daily volunteer groups. Throughout April, volunteers packed and distributed over 4,000 boxes of non-perishable and kosher-for-Passover food to disadvantaged families in the greater Tel-Aviv Jaffa area.

A Living Legacy

On Yom HaShoah (Holocaust Remembrance Day), the Jaffa Institute was honored to host Mrs. Adina Schwimmer: mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, teacher, and Holocaust survivor. Adina shared her family’s journey from former Czechoslovakia to Auschwitz, the defining separation from her mother and siblings upon arrival, her perilous time at the camp, and the long journey to freedom upon liberation. Among the Jaffa Institute staff members in attendance was Mr. Yonatan Haber, a program manager and proud grandson of Adina.
An invaluable team member, Yonatan demonstrates the resilient spirit of his grandmother through unrelenting optimism and acute problem-solving. In the name of education and empowering disadvantaged individuals, Yonatan honors his grandmother daily with his work at the Jaffa Institute.

Adina’s visit showed all of us the true meaning of resilience and hope. When her life was shattered to bits, Adina rebuilt, piece by piece; she started a career and a family, and at age 95, continues to inspire the next generations to live in kindness and gratitude.

A Season of Celebration

This spring we’re giving back, saying thank you, and wishing lots of mazel tov!

Jerusalem Bar Mitzvah Ceremony

In April, the Jaffa Institute held a unique Bar Mitzvah ceremony at the Western Wall in Jerusalem for several 13-year-old boys from our award-winning Bet Shemesh Educational Center. Sponsored by the Montreal Sephardic Jewish Community, each boy received a formal suit, along with the ceremonial tallit, tefillin, kippah, and Torah book in this special coming-of-age celebration in the Holy City.

Scholarship Ceremony

In a celebration of hope, ambition, and education, the Jaffa Institute distributed 220 scholarships to disadvantaged college and university students. The ceremony was led by long-time program partners Avraham Ben Naftali and Yosef Bar-Natan, with valued supporters Marilyn and Bryan Sheinman, Carol Manheim, and Eve Black in attendance. Our late dear friend Henry Jonas, of blessed memory, would have been proud of our students whom he supported for many years. His children, Carolyn and Adam, are continuing his gracious support.

Through this unique Scholarship Program, students of all backgrounds receive monetary support to study, while giving back to one of the Jaffa Institute’s programs through 35 hours of volunteer service each year.

Accompanying the Elderly Event

Gathering for a morning of friendship, music, and brunch, Holocaust survivors, and other participants from the Accompanying the Elderly program attended the bi-annual community gathering at the Nalaga’at Center in Jaffa. Many of the participants look forward to these events as they are able to reunite with their friends from the program, the majority of whom cannot freely leave their homes due to their living situations and medical conditions. The brunch featured entertainment from Israeli singer Ilanit, a long-time crowd favorite! Coming all the way from France, Mr. Gerard Uzan, of Fondation pour la Mémoire de la Shoah, participated in the event, conversing with the program participants who benefit daily from FMS’s generous support.

Pesach Concert

This Pesach, the Jerusalem Orchestra East West hosted a benefit concert in support of the Jaffa Institute. The performance featured a diverse range of Israel's most talented artists, including David Broza. All proceeds from this exciting evening went to support the Jaffa Institute’s holistic programs for disadvantaged communities in Israel.

Art for a Cause

Through a unique showcase, the Jaffa Institute exhibited art from two talented program participants who attend our Bet Metsuba After-School Educational Enrichment Center for Children with Special Needs. Featured in a public auction, a portion of the proceeds from this special event went to support the Jaffa Institute’s programming. Special thanks to Erez Nana for the opportunity, and to Dani and Alicia Yaacoby, whose home is sure to radiate with this beautiful art on the walls!

Employees of the Year

We are incredibly grateful to our dedicated program staff, without whom, none of the events described in the newsletter could be possible! Before the Pesach holiday break, the Jaffa Institute department heads had the opportunity to recognize some of our brightest shining stars. To Hodaya and Pini (House Parents of Neve Ofer House), Ora (House Mother of Makom Balev After-School Educational Center for Children with Special Needs), and Riki, (Program Coordinator of Neve Ofer After-School Educational Enrichment Center), on behalf of the Jaffa Institute’s children, families, and elderly program participants, thank you for all that you do!

Join us for the inaugural international

We will meet the people, taste their food, walk back into history, and feel the hip and dynamic energy of Jaffa. With interested participants from England, France, Colombia, and the United States, we are expecting a truly international experience! Visit the official program site for additional information.
